About City

Kyoto, once the capital of Japan, is a city on the island of Honshu. Steeped in history, Kyoto is home to roughly one quarter of Japan's national treasures, countless shrines and temples, and seventeen sites accepted by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. It's famous for its numerous classical Buddhist temples, as well as gardens, imperial palaces, Shinto shrines, and traditional wooden houses. It’s also known for formal traditions such as kaiseki dining, consisting of multiple courses of precise dishes, and geisha, female entertainers often found in the Gion district.  Travellers to Kyoto can easily spend a week visiting the city's historical attractions such as the Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion), Kyoto Imperial Palace, and Sanjusangendo temple.  All sections of the city contain more than one locale well worth a thorough visit, notably, some of Japan's oldest traditions, such as the tea ceremony, flower arranging, and geisha schooling originated in the city.  These ancient customs, while still practiced throughout Japan, can only be observed in their original setting in Kyoto.
